Overview

An annual report is a comprehensive document that a company or organization typically publishes on a yearly basis to provide stakeholders with information about its financial performance, activities, and overall condition. It serves as a key communication tool between the company and its shareholders, investors, employees, customers, and other interested parties. Annual reports play a crucial role in helping stakeholders make informed decisions about their involvement with a company. They are often made available in print and digital formats and are accessible on the company's website or through regulatory filings.

The company of choice for this design was Conservation International which is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and the protection of ecosystems around the world.

Process Work

Cover Designs

For my front and back covers, I wanted to keep it fairly simple and sleek. I chose to do an ocean view as the background image and overlayed a blue hue across the photo so that it wouldn’t be the main focal point when viewing them. When playing around with the layout, I realized that it would be really cool to incorporate the logo within the cover in a more clever way than just placing it on there. After some thought, I saw that I could replace the “0” in the year with their logo. I think this is visually interesting and turns an annual report into something more animated. The back is kept very to the point with just the logo in one corner and some of the main headquarter’s information in the opposite corner.

Table of Contents

For the table of contents, I wanted to find a way to make it unique while keeping true to the conservation feel. To execute this idea, I decided to use the globe as the main focal point. I then made pins that are placed at random points to use as seperators for each section.

I felt that creating the table of contents this way made it feel more like an annual report for a conservation organization rather than just a run of the mill business annual report.

Letter Design

When it came to the letter designs, I wanted to have a cohesive feeling across the entire annual report. I initially got the wave idea when creating an infographic featured later in the report. I decided it would be a visually interesting way to depict both instead of the standard square or circle bordered pictures. I also think this design allowed for a fuller coverage of the page which used more negative space than it would have had otherwise.

Ironically, and unplanned, both of the pictures I used have the backgrounds blurred. While this was not originally intentional I think it played in my favor by creating another element of cohesion across the two.

Map Design

Conservation International is quite a large organization. With that, they have a lot of headquarters/offices scattered across the globe. Again, I wanted to create a visually appealing and interesting way to display the information instead of creating a bulleted list of all of them.

I used the pin idea from the TOC as a marker for each location.

Section Designs

Keeping with the style and to create continuous cohesion, I implemented the same wave designs as featured on the letter pages onto the section split pages. Not all are positioned exactly the same but they all keep the same idea. Within each shape, I placed various wildlife or nature themed images to continue to pull on the fact that Conservation International is an environmental organization.

When it came to animal pictures I wanted to have them all be zoomed in or closer up photos of the wildlife, whereas when it came to landscape photos I opted for bird’s eye view or far out views. I liked the juxtaposition it created when viewing the different pages.

Infographics

The infographics scattered throughout the annual report are a combination of ones I created fully myself or ones that I used vectors to help achieve my finished graphics. I didn’t want to use the normal style bar graphs or pie charts. I wanted to explore ways in which I could push the design while keeping it cohesive with the rest of the report.

These are two that I created completely by hand without the use of premade vectors. I kept it simple while trying to keep the information clear and legible. The graph on the left was the initial inspiration for the wave design that is featured throughout the report. I layered the large wave shape over and over then turned that into line shapes respectively. The color choices are different hues of the main three colors featured in the style guide.

Infographics Continued

Piggybacking from above, these two pages feature infographics that I made with the help of premade vectors. The one on the left is a mix of a pull quote and infographic combined. I displayed the percentages as fish - quite literally 2.7 and 30 fish. The infographic on the left is a play on a version Conservation International did in their annual report. I, however, changed the icons to different ones and colored them all to go along with my color scheme. I made the middle bottom one as there was a lack of icon I deemed fitting. This page is the last one you see before the ending cover, I think having a sort of call to action as the last thing viewed helps it be the first thing in the viewer’s mind.
